USB C PD standard allows to use one charger for many devices in a household, no need to add a new charger every time you buy a new device. Also USB C fast chargers are bigger and more expensive to manufacture so the price of the phone would be higher if they were included

You dont get it its the same why glass bottles are not a common thing, its the transport by removing components the box becomes smaller and lighter suddenly you can fit double of the boxes in that ship container which makesbyou spend less in production but also spend less money in shipping for the device this is a common thing its simple in the end just the higher cut of the win matters.

This video does not cover real reason of removing chargers - it is not the cost of charger, it is packaging. It costs money to transport iPhones. If you can transport twice number of iPhones in one shipment then it saves company money. It also cost money to keep iPhone in inventory. If you can save space by storing same number of iPhones in same space, it saves company money. These two combined cost easily exceeds the cost of charger.

It's a shame that regular people cannot bring themselves to stop buying products from companies that behave like this. All it takes is the general public to halt the revenue stream, and these companies would have to change their products to suit their customers, else suffer a massive hit in profits. I use a phone with a removable battery and a headphone jack, features that I did not want to see vanishing from the smartphone market - I stopped buying phones when these features were withdrawn. Probably I'd get a PinePhone or Librem 5 if my current phone needed replacing.

If you've ever seen Apple's over-packaging, i.e. the brown box containing multiple iPhones for transit, it would be plainly obvious they don't care about the environment. The over-packaging is designed to suspend the iPhones with *inches* of airspace around them. This is not to protect the iPhones. The white consumer boxes they come in do that. This is literally to protect the white boxes. Because Apple trades on aesthetics, they waste a huge amount of resources in shipping them from China, just so when you see their boxes on store shelves, they're always pristine and unblemished. There are a couple other companies that do this for certain products but it's not at all common. Most companies use the smallest packaging they can, not necessarily for the environment but to save money. Apple does it for everything. Apple doesn't even care about saving money on freight, they care about what they can nickel-dime you for.

And seriously, do you have just ONE pair of charger can cable? I have one in the bedroom, one in the office, one in the car and probably more. I had been thinking in starting a "packaging-Nazi" Instagram account. I actually did once, but I'm definitely not an IG guy and I don't buy things that often. But there should be a public exhibition of how bad companies are acting with all this packaging. To make it worse, in some cases I live pretty close to a store where I can swing past after work or at any convenient time. But thanks to e-commerce, dropshipping, JIT and the overall decline of brick and mortar stores, retailers don't have stock anymore, so they don't even offer a pickup or in-store purchasing option anymore. So you're forced to create another queueing, already packaged item to be nest boxed into a bigger one, padded and all as you show, to then me moved miles on end just because they're trying to offset the cost of having inventory on-hand. Moreover, from an energy stand point, every kg (or pound) of cardboard that is added requires marginally more energy to be moved. Yes, this is tiny for a single item, but projected over the millions of packages that for example Apple or Amazon move, the effect builds up quite quickly. We could be avoiding millions of tonnes of CO2 and wasted energy in using less packaging, creating distributed hubs and making things as light and compact as possible so in case of needing to transport it somewhere, the energy conversion is maximised and as efficient as possible. The current way is really dumb and it's not going to go well unless we all do something.

It would make a little sense few years ago when there was the same charger every year. Now when iPhones are finally supporting faster charging and they put better charger into the box with iPhone 11 they will say “well, everybody already has a charger so let’s save the planet by not giving you a new one.” So I gave my iPhone 11 Pro to my wife, bought iPhone 12 mini and of course I had to buy a charger.

Man I absolutely hate new phones. I hate the camera hole punch in the screen, I hate the wraparound bezel (really who thought that was a decent idea?) I miss the headphone jack, and I don't know or care about the latest upgrades. I'm this close to just throwing my phone in the lake and getting a flip phone. I mean I get your point but I feel like there are too many assumptions made here. The apple ecosystem is pretty rough and with alot of companies making their own ecosystems most people really do already have chargers already and its most likely a fraction of people that will actually have to buy a charger. Also getting up and walking your ass to a nearby store to buy a charger instead of using amazon is a step we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint.
